Designing for Both Novices and Experts; Content Curation; Performance Objs

The eLearning Coach Newsletter

For Nerdy Fun

October 5, 2026

Greetings Reader,

I just returned from a small ATD conference in Indianapolis, called CORE4. If you're not familiar with ATD, it's a professional organization with chapters throughout the United States. I mention this because I hope you can find a group of learning professionals to spend time with in person every so often. It's invigorating. Conversations create new knowledge as they are happening. If you can't find a group, consider starting one. Or at the least, find one online.

Now on to the articles and podcast. How can a designer provide novices and experts with different learning experiences? Find out in the first article.

Next is a podcast episode about content curation. We used to talk a lot about how curating content is service that a learning team can provide to replace formal interventions or to enhance existing experiences. Find out how to be successful at curation.

And finally, something for those who are new to the field as well as those who may have some gaps. How to Write Performance Objectives. This article has three parts, and I suggest reading them all if you're a newbie.

Novice Versus Expert Design Strategies

Novices benefit from greater instructional guidance while learning, while those with prior knowledge benefit from less. How can you design for both?

The Power and Practice of Digital Curation

The authors of Ready, Set, Curate explain how to use content curation to replace or enhance courses.

Writing Performance-Based Learning Objectives

How to write internal objectives for the team and external obectives for the audience.

Now on to the goodies below.

The eLearning Coach Newsletter For Nerdy Fun August 2, 2026 Greetings Reader,Learning designers are often frustrated that decision-makers think training is the solution to every problem. Then, when it turns out that the problem persists even after training, it can make you or our field look less than stellar. Have you experienced this? The first article is a way out. Have you been wondering how you can use AI to become better at what you do, not just faster? That's great because that's what Phillipa Hardman, PhD, discusses in my latest podcast episode (link below). Or have you been thinking about the cognitive characteristics of experts? I knew it! The eLearning Coach Newsletter Stay Inspired and Up-to-Date May 5, 2026 Greetings Reader, I recently read an article that described a job interview where the candidate couldn’t answer multiple questions about the work in his portfolio. The interviewer concluded that the work was done by AI. She wrote that the interviewee had no connection or responsibility to the work he was showing, known as cognitive ownership. I find this disturbing and perhaps you do too. The first article in this edition...
